Jessica, our young turkey hen, shows great interest in everything we do, often following us around, mostly to check whether we might have something she can eat. Recently we have been painting the barn doors, and Jess has watched every move, pecking the ladder, the paintbrush, the paint, the dust sheets and even managing to ‘accidentally’ get one foot in the paint, so that the dust sheet now has turkey footprints.
She is also developing her role as a guard turkey, squawking and running at anyone who walks down the track by our field. After several stand-offs, with wings and tail spread aggressively, she seems to have accepted that our cat is not a threat. Sadly, the other turkeys died as chicks, so she is managing to get along with our other poultry, but we hope to find her some turkey friends asap.
